Herbst Sleep Appliance Dental Consult: San Diego Headache And Facial Pain

This patient presented with mild apnea and a primary complaint of snoring and daytime sleepiness. A Herbst oral airway dilator was fabricated. This video shows the first 5 minutes of wear and demonstrates the ability to speak with the appliance in place. Patients are routinely given a 2 week recall post insertion in order to monitor any jaw or tooth pain that may result from wearing the appliance. Dr Eli is the only Medicare provider for sleep mouthpieces in the San Diego area. Dr Bradley Eli: Welcome back we have put your mouthpiece in for your sleep disordered breathing and this is the first few minutes since you have had it in so you have it in right now correct? Patient: Yes Dr Bradley Eli: And you can talk? Patient: I can talk Dr Bradley Eli: And we can understand you Patient: And it feels fine Dr Bradley Eli: Are there any teeth that hurt? Patient: Nope Dr Bradley Eli: Does your jaw feel strained in that position? Patient: No Dr Bradley Eli: Ok and so what we are going to be looking for in the first 2 weeks, between now and the next time we see you, is whether or not you have an improvement in snoring if present. If your daytime sleepiness has improved. And whether or not you can keep it (the Herbst appliance) in your mouth the whole night. Do you think you will have any trouble with any of that?
