Snoring Woman

It is a sad fact that snoring is one of the most common conditions that disrupts the lives of millions of people worldwide. In the US alone, it is estimated that there are over 90 million snorers. While some snorers are blissfully unaware of the disruption they are causing to their partners on a nightly basis or they may be in denial of the situation, the reality is that there is a good chance that left unchecked, it will detrimentally impact the couple’s relationship.
It may start with lack of sleep for the partner and then move to separate sleeping arrangements, which can lead to tension, arguments and resentment within the relationship.
From a recent sleep survey conducted by the British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association:
67% of couples admitted that they argue about snoring and 58% of them said that snoring causes problems within their relationship.
And a massive 82% of partners regularly leave the bedroom for either the spare room or the sofa. (The spare room is the favoured refuge for 57% of partners, with the remaining 43% bedding down on the sofa each night). Sadly some couples seek this as a permanent solution, as was highlighted by the US building industry’s report of the growing number of new houses being built with two master bedrooms.
So what is this trend doing to the level of intimacy within these relationships? Well, that same survey found that 60% of respondents said they would make love more often if they or their partner stopped snoring! Taking it to the extreme, the study found that a significant number of heavy snorers had reduced sexual drive with over 50% of them also experiencing erectile dysfunction.
But we are not just talking about sex here, as intimacy within a relationship also built on physical (eg cuddle times, hugs, kisses) and conversational contact between couples that usually occurs when they retire to bed. Without that time together, distancing and reduced communication can develop between them, just as spending more time together can strengthen a relationship.
Separate bedrooms can work as long as both partners are committed and work hard to still having that nightly intimate time together before departing to their separate rooms.
Some handy hints to reduce the affect of snoring on your relationship:
• Acknowledge that there is a problem caused by the snoring and work together to solve it. Communication is the key.
• Try to find the cause of the snoring, especially if you think it might be a medical condition and you need to seek professional advice. But it may be as easy as making a few simple lifestyle changes eg losing weight
• Investigate snoring solutions (and there are lots) as a shared experience – this in itself can increase intimacy and strengthen a relationship. Try a variety of solutions, until you find what best suits you and your partner.
• Value your relationship by respecting and acknowledging your partner’s needs. This in itself conveys caring and love and will improve the strength of your relationship
Jennifer Ross-Taylor is the author of the recently launched eBook “Is Snoring Destroying Your Relationship While You Sleep?”
Her book, based on personal experiences, explains why snoring is called ‘the silent relationship killer’ as it can destroy relationships without couples even being aware of it happening. While the physical effect of snoring is often talked about, it is rarely linked to reduced intimacy and failing relationships.
This ebook also discusses snore remedies to help restore the intimacy and happiness back into a relationship.
