That all pregnant women should know
My wife Kathy is expecting our third child at any time, and her experiences during her pregnancy Current and past raise some important questions that all men and women, pregnant or not, should know. Even if poor sleep, nasal congestion, depression postpartum weight gain is almost an accepted part of pregnancy, these can be especially problematic for women who struggle to recover well beyond its first years after pregnancy. Besides the excess weight that they can not seem to take off, many of these women find this level of health and energy are considerably worse than it was before being pregnant.
However, there are measures you can take before delivery to help him back to the way you felt before getting pregnant. There are some important concepts related to pregnancy, which are often overlooked by many medical professionals, but if they looked at my paradigm of breathing during sleep, explains that these events occur, and what you can do about it.
What You Do not Know can hurt you
In my book, Sleep, Interrupted I refer to a eureka moment, when my wife helped me realize what helped her get rid of her postpartum depression after our first two children were born.
It's a given that you will gain weight if you are pregnant. What many of us not think, however, is that when you gain weight from your abdominal region, the area of fat cells in your tongue and throat begin expanded too. This fact alone may have significant consequences for pregnant women, especially during and after pregnancy.
As I explain in my book thoroughly, all modern humans are sensitive to upper airway narrowing and collapse due to various degrees. And because the air is a unique dynamic equipment that is modified by any change in the soft tissues around the area, the weight gain can dramatically increase the impact of rate inspiration and expiration, especially during sleep when the muscles and soft tissues lose and lose tension off.
As I will explain, this is one reason why, even those who are not pregnant, may progress to extreme sleep breathing problems called obstructive sleep apnea. Likewise, any amount of weight gain can move on this line to some degree. That is why many pregnant women begin to snore, especially his third quarters.
Complications during pregnancy
eclamspia Pre-gestational diabetes are two common conditions during mid-pregnancy. These conditions are thought to be distinct clinical conditions specific to pregnant women. Pre-eclampsia is a potentially dangerous condition in which the mother developing high blood pressure with risk of severe kidney failure and death for the baby.
Diabetes pregnancy is another dangerous condition for mother and baby. There are many studies that have reported an association between obstructive sleep apnea and these two conditions during pregnancy, but they are typically seen as occasional, isolated events. Doctors usually recommend changes in diet and lifestyle, and then resort to drugs, when conservative options do not work.
But despite numerous studies showing that women with preeclampsia can be effectively treated with CPAP (continuous positive pressure airway) is considered an oddity as rare and has not gained attention in a way very common to treat preeclampsia. The same situation applies for gestational diabetes.
The importance of sleep position during pregnancy
Women are advised to sleep on his left side during pregnancy, probably due to less pressure on the courts internal and vital blood vessels in the growing fetus. This is especially true in the third quarter. But one thing to consider is that women gain weight if they will develop mild or significant problems of sleep breathing, by necessity, they naturally prefer to sleep on their sides anyway.
Likewise, many people with respiratory problems sleeping because sleep on their sides or stomachs cited the following reasons: due to various degrees of narrowing of the mandible, tongue and larynx (which grow to its normal size), take up much space inside the mouth. These are people who gag easily when the doctor presses the tongue depressor with force to the back of the throat can be seen behind the language. For these people, when they lie down flat on his back, the tongue falls back in part due to the severity of the airways that do much more narrow. In this position, the person typically breathes through a crack only 2-3 mm wide. When awake, breathing is normal, because your neck muscle tone increases as you inhale.
However, once you fall asleep, and especially as you enter deeper levels of sleep, by definition, all muscles, including the throat muscles and tongue to relax. With only 2-3 mms of openness, and the relaxation of the muscles of the tongue, your tongue will fall backwards causing obstruction. Most people will wake up, consciously or unconsciously, after a second round or two, and then to the side. However, if you stopped breathing for 10 seconds or more, then you only had one apnea. Most people partially compensate for sleep on their sides or stomachs, but this usually is not good enough.
That is why when the weight gain in pregnant women fat cells in your throat to narrow throat, and aggravate the vicious circle. During this process, if you happen to also catch a cold or suffer and simple assault allergy, mild inflammation that occurs in the breathing passages can further reduce the throat, which increases over the collapse of the tongue. After blocking, the pressures huge vacuum in your throat causes slight amounts of normal stomach juices to get in your throat, causing more inflammation and narrowing of the throat.
It was also demonstrated that these same juices can climb into the nose, nasal congestion worse. Nasal congestion exacerbates the collapse of the tongue, causing a vacuum effect downstream.
That is why, given these circumstances, weight gain during pregnancy, although normal, should be gradual and moderate.
Progesterone's Secret
Although pregnancy and in particular weight gain which leads to many adverse side effects for women There is one advantage that pregnant women during pregnancy that many men with sleep breathing problems have not called progesterone.
Progesterone a hormone that is vitally concerned with the female reproductive cycle (along with estrogen). During a woman's menstrual cycle, estrogen helps stimulate the development eggs and release, while progesterone promotes uterine health, to support the entire development of the embryo possible. A little-known aspect of the progesterone even though many physicians are not aware is that it acts as an upper airway dilator muscle. This can have profound effects on their language, giving you more muscle tone.
For pregnant women, muscle tone is light, in effect, helping to combat what could be a negative side affects to weight gain during pregnancy. However, during post-pregnancy when the levels decreased, is another story.
Studies have shown that muscle tone of the language is lower in postmenopausal women and significantly increased when progesterone is added.
Imagine the effects of progesterone, decreasing slightly before the females' periods or during menopause, when progesterone begins to fall slowly from the age of 40. The same thing occurs during pregnancy: progesterone shot during pregnancy and falls immediately after birth. During pregnancy, despite all the expected weight gain, progesterone (in addition to maintaining the health of the uterus) prevents the tongue from falling backward. But once a woman delivers and progesterone drops, you get all the extra weight of pregnancy without the protection of progesterone. No wonder women have trouble sleeping during the first weeks after birth (besides having to feed the baby every few hours).
In retrospect, these factors severely affected the way my wife felt after my first son was born. It took almost a year before her postpartum depression completely resolved after our first son was born. Only after she lost all her pregnancy weight she starts to feel better.
Breathe better, sleep better, feel better
Although pregnancy can affect the way you breathe, and thus affect the way you sleep during and even after you deliver, there are ways simple to minimize the negative side effects and accelerate the recovery postpartum.
The first thing you should do is keep all their air passages clear and free of congestion and that includes your nose. If your nose is stuffy, the simplest thing to do is apply saline nasal, which come in various applicators nasal spray pumps to machines Water Pik. Another popular way to get salt water in your nose is a Neti pot, which is Indian Alladin lamp a container as you mix your salt and pour it into your nose.
If your nostrils collapse when you breathe in, then nasal dilator strips (Breathe Rite is a brand), or internal nasal dilator devices (Nozovent, Breathewitheez, Nasalcones are three examples) can help. Sometimes women are put on medication for allergy to pollen, dust or pets. This should be done under a doctor's care. If none of these options, it's time to see an ear, nose and throat doctor.
If you normally like to sleep on his stomach or side, so your tongue can be susceptible to collapse. There are several dental devices that are available for snoring and sleep apnea mild to moderate obstructive. Although not officially designed for use in pregnant women, these devices are not harmful to the baby and can only help the baby, since it helps the mother to sleep better.
If you have any of the complications of pregnancy or if fatigue is severe to the point where you are incapacitated, a consultation with a doctor of sleep can be granted. CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure in the airways, was studied and found to be useful in a handful of small preliminary studies.
The most important thing to do after delivery is trying to lose pregnancy weight. This is obviously easier said than done, but there is a correlation direct correlation between weight and how persistent you will feel. You may want to consider working with a health professional (doctor, nutritionist or trainer). Devices mentioned during pregnancy may be suitable for after delivery too.
If you are pregnant or not, breathing well while you are sleeping is vital for your overall health. But if you're pregnant, it is even more important that you breathe well, especially in the immediate period after surrender.
