Surgery options for snoring

If you wake up with bruises all over his body from your partner to sleep with you as a punching bag during the night due to her incessant snoring, it might be time to consider surgery to correct this problem. If you have tried behavioral techniques and conservative therapies such as CPAP for eliminating snoring and everything else has failed, consult your doctor about surgery options. Your insurance company may consider this an elective or cosmetic surgery. Surgery is a last resort and should only be used in more severe cases or where serious health risks are involved, such as apnea. Surgery for snoring can be accomplished as an outpatient procedure. In surgical procedures described below, you can get an idea of your options ontolaryngologist (ears, nose and throat doctor) can recommend.

Somnoplasty: Also known as Radio Frequency Tissue Ablation (RFTA) a minimally invasive procedure performed under local anesthesia that uses radio frequency energy in the form of a needle electrode that discharges energy to reduce the soft tissue of the upper airways. After the procedure, the body reabsorb the tissue. This procedure often requires more than one application.

Uyulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) may also be performed as Uvuloplasty laser assisted (LAUP). This procedure can be performed in people with mild apnea. LAUP and UPPP removes the soft tissue at the back of the throat and palate, enlargement of the airway during the opening of the throat. UPPP corrects excess tissue uvula, enlarged tonsils and adenoids or excess tissue in the larynx. This is a hospital procedure performed under general anesthesia and recovery time can be up to three weeks. Difficulty swallowing during recovery will be the result of this procedure. It effective in reducing snoring and cures 46-73% of cases. With LAUP, the procedure involves using a laser to cut the soft palate and uvula cutting. The 2-5 outpatient sessions necessary and given 4-6 weeks apart, each session lasting 30 minutes. LAUP is not recommended for patients with mild apnea and snoring, but may be used for loud, disruptive snoring.

Maxillary mandibular advancement surgery: This invasive procedure is recommended for patients with craniofacial anomalies and reserved for people suffering from severe sleep apnea. The surgery corrects the anatomical neck or face that is causing the apnea.

Nasal surgery: a procedure for Patients with a deviated septum or other obstructions in the nose that are causing the blockage of the airway.

Genio-Glossus Progress (GGA): the genioglossus is the main muscle of the tongue that retracts, advances and depresses the tongue. This opens the overpass through respiration that operate in the language. Used for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) lifting the tongue to fall into the back of the throat during sleep. A small screw is inserted the lower jaw bone and prevents this from happening. This procedure is usually reversible. In addition, tongue reduction surgery can be performed to minimize the size of the tongue base, opening the airway and eliminate snoring.
