British Sleep Snoring

Snoring may signal a serious illness
What the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, King George II of England and Roman emperor Marcus Otho have in common? All these famous personalities were snoring – a common problem that affects more than one third of adults and may indicate a serious health condition.
"The sound snoring is caused by the tissues of the throat that vibrate and partially block your airways, as the air flow becomes more vigorous in response to the narrowing of the airways, increases the vibration of the tissues and snoring becomes louder. The Vancouver Sleep and Breathing Center, said 30 percent of the adult population and as much as 50 percent the population in some areas snore. The most common victims are male, overweight and the problem often worsens with age, "according to Dr. Herminia P. Chavez, the Queen Mary Holistic Center Manila.
Snoring has many causes. Chavez said that these include a low, thick soft palate (the muscles palate), enlarged tonsils or adenoids (tissue at the back of the throat), excessive intake before bedtime, being overweight, chronic congestion or a nasal septal deviation (a crooked partition between the nostrils).
Snorers are in good company since many of them include former U.S. presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses Grant, and Richard Nixon. Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U.S. President Grover Cleveland were both overweight, included alcohol and were also snorers.
For most people, frequent and loud snoring is often a nuisance, especially for bedmate snorer or colleagues who may find it difficult to sleep. The Guinness Book of World Records reports that the louder the snorer is Kare Walkert Kumla, Sweden, whose level of snoring was measured at 93 decibels (equivalent to the sound of a lawn mower). Previously, the record for highest snorer was made by Melvin Switzer of Kent, England, whose snoring score was 87.5 decibels (equivalent to a siren of a fire).
In others, however, snoring can be a symptom of a sleep disorder potentially serious called obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), characterized by episodes of loud snoring followed by periods of silence when breathing stops for a moment. This can occur several times during the night, causing lack of oxygen and an increase in carbon dioxide that the forces of snorer wake up with a loud snoring or gasping sound.
"Untreated, persistent snoring caused by OSA may increase the risk of developing hypertension, heart failure and stroke. In children may increase the risk of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), "Chavez warned.
Studies show that OSA can also reduce the unit snorer sex due to oxygen deprivation, fatigue and depression. This explains why habitual snorers often lose interest in sex. To prevent snoring, Chavez offers the following tips:

Treat nasal congestion or obstruction. Having a deviated septum or allergies can limit airflow through the nose. This forces you to breathe through your mouth, increasing the likelihood snoring.
Limit or avoid alcohol and sedatives. Avoid drinking alcohol at least four hours before bedtime, and tell your doctor about your snoring before taking sedatives or hypnotics.
