CPAP is the only answer for sleep apnea? Is there a cure?
There are few effective treatments for OSA. They fall into several categories: weight loss, surgery, dental appliances, and a device for breathing assistance. The most popular and most effective is the use of a device that provides air under slight pressure to the airway through a nasal mask. Several types of devices, positive pressure, including CPAP, airway pressure bi-level positive, and responsive "smart" devices airway pressure. They are all variations on Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, or CPAP. There is no lifetime warranty, the device no "cure" for sleep apnea! The type of treatment prescribed will depend upon the type and location of airway obstruction and general health of the person. Obstruction can occur anywhere in the nose (deviated septum, swollen nasal passages from allergies) upper pharyngeal (adenoids, long soft palate, large uvula, large tonsils), or the lower pharynx (tongue that is large or situated far, short jaw, short neck and broad, with narrow airway). The location of obstructions varies between individuals, and an individual may have more an obstruction.
